I’ve been sitting on this one for a little while now, and honestly, keeping quiet about it has been the hardest part. I gotta say, I haven’t been this psyched about a bike in a while since building my rim brake SL6 Sagan. If you follow me on YouTube, you know I’ve been hinting at something big for a minute. A new build is in the works — something I’m calling my hyperbike project — and today I’m pulling back the curtain on what I consider to be the soul of the entire build: the Reserve 57|64 Turbulent Aero wheelset.
These aren’t just wheels. These are the foundation. The statement piece. The reason the whole build exists the way it does.
Why Wheels First?
When I start thinking about any bike build, I don’t always start with the frame. I start with intent. What do I want this machine to do? How fast do I want it to go? What roads will it scream across? For this particular project, the answer was clear from the start: I want this bike to be a flat-out weapon on the road that slices through the wind. Something built for speed, built for Miami’s notoriously flat and brutally fast group rides, and built to turn heads at the same time.
Once I locked in the vision, the wheels became the first decision to pour my research and time into. And when it comes to deep-section aero carbon wheels, one brand kept rising to the top of every conversation I had, the Reserve Turbulent Aero wheels.
I reached out to Reserve, shared my vision for the build, and they were kind enough to partner with me and send over the 57|64 Turbulent Aero wheelset to be part of the project. I want to be upfront about that — but here’s the thing: I would have bought these wheels regardless as it was apart of my vision. The moment I started researching what the Reserve 57|64 TA could do, the decision was already made in my head. The partnership just made it happen faster.
Getting to Know Reserve Wheels
Before I talk about the wheels themselves, let me say a word about the brand because it matters. Reserve is the wheel division of Santa Cruz Bicycles, which tells you something right away about the pedigree and the attention to engineering that goes into every rim that rolls out of their facility. They’re not a brand that cuts corners. They build wheels that have your back with a legitimate Lifetime Warranty, safe semi-hooked rim designs, and real people to provide support, not just a chatbot.
In a market flooded with budget carbon wheelsets promising the world and delivering headaches, Reserve is doing something different. They’re building wheels you can actually trust at speed.
