Continental Grand Prix 5000: The Clincher Tire That Still Runs the Road

The Specs That Matter

For those of you who want the numbers:

Designed for inner tubes — this is a clincher, full stop. Not tubeless ready

330 TPI casing — exceptionally high thread count that contributes directly to that supple, compliant ride feel

Weight: 241g (25mm) — light enough for performance, not so light it feels fragile

Available in 25mm and 28mm — the 28mm is my setup of choice, giving a solid balance of speed, comfort, and contact patch

Folding bead — easy to pack and carry a spare

Puncture protection: Vectran Breaker (full coverage)

Clincher vs. Tubeless: Why I’m Still On Tubes

Everyone’s going tubeless. I get it. The GP5000 TR is a fantastic tire, and for a lot of riders, the setup makes sense. But here’s my honest take: for the way I ride, the clincher with a quality inner tube is still the move.

When you factor in the weight of sealant and the tubeless-ready tire itself, the actual weight advantage of tubeless on the road gets a lot closer than the marketing suggests. Some riders in the community have noted that the GP5000 clincher running a quality latex tube actually comes very close in rolling resistance to the tubeless setup — with simpler roadside repair options if something does go wrong.

And on a build like mine, where I want everything dialed and clean with zero stress on a Miami group ride, knowing I can swap a tube in three minutes by the side of the road is just practical. No sealant mess. No re-seating a tubeless bead in South Florida heat.

That’s not me knocking tubeless. It’s me being honest about what works for my riding.

How They Actually Feel on the Road

Short version: incredible.

The GP5000 clincher has this smooth, confident roll that just keeps going. From the moment you clip in and start building speed, there’s a lively feel to the bike — like the tire is working for you. On the flat roads around Miami, the speed is effortless. The low rolling resistance isn’t some abstract lab number, you feel it in how easily you maintain speed through a pace line.

In corners, the LazerGrip shoulders do their thing and you can lean in with trust. Not the nervous, uncertain feeling you get from a harder compound tire — real confidence that lets you focus on the ride, not what your tires are doing.

The ride quality on rougher surfaces is where the GP5000 clincher really earns its keep. That Active Comfort layer actually works. Coming from the stiffer feel of the S-Works Turbo, riding the GP5000 felt like someone turned the harshness dial down two notches. Not soft — fast and composed — but genuinely comfortable over extended miles.

And the puncture resistance? I’ve been riding these through Miami group rides, through city streets, and on weekend long rides — and the flats that plagued me on the S-Works Turbo have basically disappeared.

Continental GP5000 vs. Specialized S-Works Turbo: My Honest Comparison

Since I lived on both tires, here’s how I actually see them stacking up:

Ride quality: The GP5000 wins for me, and it’s not particularly close. The Active Comfort Technology and the supple 330 TPI casing give a noticeably more comfortable feel under hard effort. The S-Works Turbo rides stiffer — some riders like that feedback, but I found it fatiguing over longer distances.

Puncture resistance: Continental takes this one clean. The Vectran Breaker is a serious puncture protection layer, and I’ve had significantly fewer flats on the GP5000 than I ever did on the S-Works Turbo. For the Miami riding I do — mixed road conditions, some debris from storms, group rides that don’t slow down for anything — reliability matters.

Speed/Rolling resistance: Both are fast tires and both will get you where you’re going quickly. The GP5000’s rolling resistance is class-leading, and with a good latex tube in the clincher setup, you’re not giving up meaningful speed.

Durability: The GP5000 holds up well over thousands of miles. The wear rate is strong for a performance-oriented tire.

Bottom line: The S-Works Turbo has the branding and the good looks. The Continental GP5000 has the performance, the protection, and the feel that makes it the tire I keep coming back to.

The Role These Tires Play in the New Build

I’m not going to spill everything yet — the full build reveal is coming and it’s going to be worth the wait. What I will say is that when I started spec’ing out this new road bike, the tires were one of the first things I locked in. There was no debate.

The Continental Grand Prix 5000 clincher in 28mm is the choice because this build is about performance you can actually feel on every ride — not just performance that looks good in a spec sheet. The combination of low rolling resistance, puncture protection that actually works, and that supple, comfortable ride quality is exactly the energy I want this bike to have.

These tires are a statement. And when you see the full build, you’ll understand why they fit.

The Sum Up

The Continental Grand Prix 5000 clincher is one of those rare tires that genuinely earns its reputation. While the cycling world chases tubeless setups, the original clincher continues to be one of the fastest, most reliable, and most comfortable high-performance road tires you can put on a bike. Coming from the Specialized S-Works Turbo — which gave me harder ride feedback and a frustrating run of flats — the switch back to the GP5000 was an instant reminder of why this tire has been the benchmark for so long.

If you’re building a road bike, upgrading your current setup, or just tired of compromising between speed, comfort, and reliability, put the Continental Grand Prix 5000 clincher on your list. Seriously.
